of Curriculum and Instruction - Library Media Program (undergraduate and M.Ed. option)
II. SUMMARY The
Library Media Program is offered jointly with UM and UM-Western. In the process of program review, it
was determined that students would be better served and standards met by reducing the number of
required credits in the program and changing a few courses. Program faculty at both campuses have
agreed
to the following proposed changes (memo attached):
- Reduce the total number of credits from 25 to 21.
- Delete LIBM 463 Library Collection Development and LIBM 465 Library Media Technical Processes and
combine
into one 4-credit course, LIBM 467 Collection Development and Cataloging.
- Create and substitute LIBM 462 Youth Literature for Librarians (3 credits) for EDU 334 Children's and
Young
Adult Lit (4 credits) as taught by UM-Western.
- Reduce the number of required credits and hours in LIBM 495 Practicum from 3 credits and 90 hours to 2
credits and 60 hours.
- Add LIBM 461 Information Literacy to the UM catalog as it is part of the program and is not reflected as
such as it is typically taught by UM-Western.
- Change the course name for LIBM 468 to remove the word "Media."
- Change the name of the program from Library Media to Teacher Librarian Program.
- Change name of M.Ed. option from Library Media to Teacher Librarian.
- This change will also reduce the directed courses in the M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction, Library
Media
option. The number of credits for the degree still exceeds the minimum of 37 credits.

course is part of the library media program offered jointly with UM and UM-Western. In the process of
program review by UM-Missoula and UM-Western faculty, it was determined that students would be better
served
and standards met by reducing the number of required credits in the program and changing a few
courses. It has been a number of years since the program was revised. The changes streamline the
program and make it more regionally competitive. The changes reflect the shifting roles of teacher
librarians in the schools aligning with Common Core Standards in information and technology literacy and
increasing emphasis on shared accountability for K-12 student outcomes. The name change better reflects
the role of librarians in K-12 schools and will allow prospective program candidates to find the program
more easily during the search process. Library program faculty at both campuses have agreed to the
proposed
changes.
